What Actually Happens When You Choke

"Choking" in golf — performing significantly below your ability under pressure — is one of the most misunderstood phenomena in sports. It's not about weakness or lack of preparation. It's a specific neurological event that can be understood and managed.

The Neuroscience

Under normal conditions, your well-practiced golf swing is controlled primarily by the basal ganglia and cerebellum — brain regions responsible for automated motor skills. You don't consciously think about each movement; the swing just flows.

Under high pressure, the prefrontal cortex — your conscious, analytical brain — becomes hyperactive. It tries to "take over" the swing, inserting conscious control into a process that works best on autopilot. This is called "explicit monitoring" or "reinvestment," and it's the neurological basis of choking.

Why Good Players Choke More on Easy Shots

Counter-intuitively, slightly speeding up your routine under pressure can help. It gives the analytical brain less time to interfere. Don't rush, but don't slow down either.

4. Develop a Distraction Technique

Some tour players hum a song, squeeze their left hand, or count backward during their routine. These simple tasks occupy the prefrontal cortex so it can't interfere with the swing.
